Patient's mother to move SC for euthanasia

December 16, 2004 15:43 IST

The mother of a patient suffering from muscular distrophy said she would move the Supreme Court seeking permission for her son to donate his organs.

The Andhra Pradesh high court had on Wednesday rejected a petition seeking permission to harvest K Venkatesh's organs on the grounds that the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1995 has no such provisions.

"My son K Venkatesh's last wish is to donate his organs to give life to others. I am battling to fulfill his wish," Sujata told PTI in Hyderabad on Thursday. "I am also meeting the chief minister and the governor in a day or so, seeking their intervention and will also approach the high court to rethink its verdict rejecting the appeal for euthanasia," she said.

Asked about the medical committee, which had examined her 25-year-old son and submitted its report to the high court, which subsequently rejected her petition, Sujata said, "I am requesting for another committee comprising neurologists and cardiologists to examine him."

Dr Veer Prasad, vice-president of Global Hospital, where Venkatesh is on a life support systems, said, "His condition is deteriorating day by day."
