Mamata may return to Cabinet: Vajpayee

May 18, 2003 15:31 IST

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Bannerjee may be inducted in a reshuffle of the Cabinet to be conducted soon, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee said on Sunday.

Confirming media reports about an imminent reshuffle, Vajpayee, who is on a holiday in Manali, hinted at the whittling down of the responsibilities of some ministers.

On when the reshuffle will be carried out, he said an 'auspicious' date will be chosen for it. When reporters asked whether anyone from Himachal Pradesh will be inducted, he said, "I will not reveal everything right now."

There has been media speculation that former Union minister Shanta Kumar could be reinducted into the Cabinet.

Vajpayee also ruled out the possibility of former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Kalyan Singh rejoining the Bharatiya Janata Party.

There have been media reports that in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls, Singh may be brought back to the party fold to attract the Other Backward Caste votebank.
