The survivors of last Sunday's massacre in Nadimarg, who had left their houses with their bag and baggage for Jammu on Friday, have been persuaded by the Jammu and Kashmir police and the Anantnag district administration to return.

"We had a five-hour meeting with them. They were apprehensive about their security, but we convinced them to return to their houses," Deputy Inspector General (South Kashmir) M A Anjum said.

Security at Nadimarg, meanwhile, has been upgraded. A Central Reserve Police Force company -- around 150 personnel -- has been stationed in the village. The presence of the Jammu and Kashmir police in the village has also been reinforced.

"The security of Kashmiri Pandits all across the Valley has been upgraded," Anjum said.

He said nine policemen suspended after the Nadimarg incident are being questioned to establish whether they were involved in the massacre.

"They will be dismissed if found guilty," Anjum said.
