Gen N C Vij takes over as Chief of Army Staff

December 31, 2002 13:03 IST

Gen Nirmal Chander Vij on Tuesday took over as the Chief of Army Staff from General S Padmanabhan.

The army's foremost strategist and Kargil war-decorated soldier, Gen Vij will be the country's 21st Chief of Army Staff.

At a simple ceremony in South Block, Gen Padmanabhan personally put the insignia of the full General on Vij's uniform. Gen Vij will formally take over as the Army Chief at a function on Wednesday.

Earlier, braving rain and chill, Gen Padmanabhan was given a ceremonial guard of honour by the Rajputana Rifles. He also laid a wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti, the memorial for soldiers who lost their lives while performing their duties.
