Punjab ministers in sex scandal; BJP to order probe

December 22, 2002 21:28 IST

The Bharatiya Janata Party will order a probe into the alleged involvement of three Punjab ministers in "objectionable activities" during the election campaign in Gujarat, party leader Sangh Priya Gautam said on Sunday.

The three ministers reportedly forced a junior woman politician, who was detailed to assist them, into sexual intercourse in an Ahmedabad hotel.

"Such an activity by Punjab ministers has brought bad name not only to the Sikh community, but also to the state," he said.

Urging Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh to order an inquiry into the accusations against his Cabinet colleagues, Gautam said, "The episode has hurt the feelings of the people of the state. If Amarinder is so sure that his Cabinet colleagues are not involved in immoral acts then he should at least initiate action against those who are trying to harm the reputation of the Congress."

The chief minister, however, said that the allegations were baseless.
