Patchai: A musical treat

Harris Jayaraj has done it again. After the superb audio track of Unnale Unnale, he has come out with another spell-binding musical fare in Patchai kili Muthucharam.

Directed by Goutham Menon, Patchai kili is the first film of Jyothika to be released after her marriage to actor Surya. Sarath Kumar playes the hero.

The film is about how a momentary emotional aberration on the part of the hero causes havoc later in his life.

Combined with the lyrics of Thamarai (of Vaseekara fame) and the myriad voices of Bombay Jayashree, Madhusree, Krish and Naresh Iyer, the album is a highly enjoyable musical treat. Though there are only four numbers in Pachai kili, Harris has proved that short is indeed sweet.

The album kicks off with a moderately racy prologue in western style. Bombay Jayashree croons Unakkul Naane in her typical whispering style suffused with myriad emotions, transporting you to another world. Thamarai's evocative lyrics have captured the sweet ethos of love and longing. The violin at the interlude is so beautiful it produces goose bumps.

What follows next is Un sirippinil sung

by Soumya Rao and Robby. The song is about love and how the lovers dream of each other even in their waking moments. Though the tune is western, there is free flow of melody. Cascading strains of mandolin, dilruba and saxophone heighten the poignancy of the number.

Next up is high-pitched Kadhal konjam. Love is the central theme here, too. Rendered by Naresh Iyer, the youth-oriented track has rhythmic beats and vibrant yet restrained percussion aided by impressive chorus and a trace of hip-hop at the end.

The repetition of Unakkul naane and Un sirippinil on the reverse side comes as a bonus. Instead of Bombay Jayashree, it is Madhusree who gives a deep-throated version of Unakkul naane. There is variation in rhythm and beats too. She holds her own with the classically trained Jayashree.

Harris has lined up Krish, Karthik and Naresh Iyer to render the last number, Karu Karu. Krish's voice has a unique tone. It is a racy number with fast beats and heavy instrumentation.

Pachai kili music is all heart and soul.
