Samsung's 10.1-inch Galaxy Note 2014 is a mark of privilege. A mini TV in your hand. With a 2,560x1,600-pixel LCD display and an octa-core processor, it's also for the privileged at Rs 50,000.

Though the back has faux black leather with fake stitching and the edge of the tab a silver metal rim to convince you that it's truly a luxury, the plastic feel of the former quickly undoes the hint of premium.

It's too big and heavy to use with one hand but with two, the tab's brilliant screen compensates for the loss of that ease.

On the top right are the volume and power button, good enough speakers on either side, a 3.5mm headphone jack on the left edge and the stylus and the microSD card (for increasing memory up to 64GB) and microSIM card slots on the right.

The screen overwhelms, is crisp and has good viewing angles. Reading, watching videos or playing graphic-intensive games on it are a vivid experience.

The S Pen stylus comes with a good tip and accuracy. Though it's easy to write, sketch or doodle and makes the tab a handy notebook, there's a little lag between the scribbling and the text appearing on the screen. Not exactly as if you were writing with a pen on paper.

The new Note 10.1 boasts an octa-core processor (one 1.9GHz quad-core and another 1.3GHz quad-core).

It has 3GB of RAM and the variant we got had 32GB internal memory (of which 25.46GB is for use).

The 8MP rear camera with LED flash and a 2MP front camera with high-definition recording ability are average and take grainy pictures. This is a major disappointment for a device that wishes to be upper-class.

The new Note runs on the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and features the Knox security app that lets you create private user account.

Connectivity options are Wi-Fi, 3G and Bluetooth 4.0. The 8,220mAh battery is a turbo and will serve for heavy users well.

Verdict

A big, rich screen and powerful battery make it ideal for gaming and videos but the Note 2014 could have a better camera if you are paying so much for it.
