
The electricity sector in India is the world's fifth largest with an an installed capacity of 205.34 gigawatt (GW) as of June 2012.
The captive power plants generate an additional 31.5 GW. Thermal power plants constitute 66% of the installed capacity, hydroelectric about 19% and remaining is a combination of wind, small hydro, biomass, waste-to-electricity, and nuclear sources.
Currently, India suffers from a major shortage of electricity generation capacity, being the world's fourth largest energy consumer after United States, China and Russia.
Of the 1.4 billion people of the world who have no access to electricity in the world, India accounts for over 300 million.
