There has been 'a slowdown' in workplace stress in the country, as the businesses are adjusting to more realistic performance goals, a survey by the advisory firm Grant Thornton says.

Only 42 percent of the respondents of the international business report this year said they are witnessing increase in the stress levels, against 56 percent last year.

"Businesses have learned to analyze risks better, factoring them into their performance, and are setting themselves more realistic targets. And, of course, some businesses are faring well despite the bleak economic backdrop," said Grant Thornton India senior partner, Munesh Khanna.

Thirty-one percent of those polled said performance target was the main cause for stress, followed by competition (15 per cent) and the plethora of communication (12 percent).

However, contrary to the popular notion, office politics ranked at the bottom (7 percent) as a cause. On ways to beat the stress, going on a holiday topped the the list (40 percent), followed by entertainment (29 percent).

"We strongly advocate taking the time to step away, reflect and recharge in order to bring a new perspective to decision making," said Khanna.
