Wipro Technologies will deploy Sun Microsystems' Java Enterprise System for General Motors' IT network across the world, as part of a recent $27 million contract received from the global auto major.

The company will also be a partner in deploying Sun's Solaris 10 operating system as the platform for GM's networking infrastructure. The deployment will make GM the largest company to build a service-oriented architecture using the Java ES suite and will also help the US-major set up a robust information system.

As Wipro had earlier worked on Sun's technologies, the company was awarded this project, sources close to the deal told Business Standard.

This is part of a $7 billion outsourcing contract offered by GM to various IT service providers, including EDS, Hewlett-Packard, Capgemini, IBM, Compuware/Covisint and Wipro.

The project is expected to rake in $27 million in revenue for Wipro over a five-year period, with its subsidiary Wipro Technologies expected to deploy middleware stack for GM across various countries.

When contacted, both Sun Microsystems spokespersons in India and Wipro President (enterprise applications) Suresh Vaswani confirmed that GM was rolling out Java ES and Wipro was the integrator for the project. However, neither divulged financial details nor the number of people to be employed.

Wipro will deliver its services under a 'integration factory model' and will be implementing the contract under its capacity as a tier-I system integrator. GM had decided to integrate the complete Java ES stack, a set of enterprise network services, late last year in an effort to simplify integration between systems throughout its network.

The auto major is also planning to extend its current portal implementation by adding Sun Java Identity Management Suite to maintain a secure and reliable environment, and simplify user experience.
