Telecom regulator Trai has initiated action against cellular operators including Bharti, Idea and Hutchison for defying its order on selective blocking of calls originating and terminating in some basic service operators' networks.
Companies against whom action has been initiated include Bharti Cellular (Delhi, Gujarat), Bharti Mobile (Karnataka), Idea Cellular (Gujarat, Delhi), Fascel Ltd (Gujarat), Sterling Cellular (Delhi), Bharti Mobile (Punjab), Spice Communications (Punjab), Hutchison Essar South (Karnataka, Chennai) and Bharti Mobinet (Chennai).
"The regulator exercised its powers under Trai Act to initiate action against the companies," Minister of State for Communications Sumitra Mahajan told Rajya Sabha in a written reply.
In reply to another question, she said it has been suggested that government cancel licenses of those telecom companies which have not fulfilled the promise of installing public telephones in rural areas.
