Nishith Desai has been elected President, The Indus Entrepreneurs, Mumbai Chapter, for 2004-06.

Nishith DesaiDesai has taken over from Mahesh Murthy, the erstwhile president of TiE Mumbai.

TiE is an organisation chartered by entrepreneurs, corporate executives and senior professionals with roots in India and the United States, with the explicit goal of benefiting all entrepreneurs, would-be entrepreneurs and professionals with an interest in entrepreneurship.

"TiE is all about mentoring entrepreneurs, turning job seekers into job creators. TiE has become a global force now. It is no longer confined only to the Indian ethnic entrepreneurs and venture capitalists. Chinese and Americans also have begun to become a part of TiE and entrepreneurs in Pakistan have also been welcoming TiE initiatives. It transcends IT and has started causing ripple effects in other sectors such as media, entertainment and retailing," said Desai in a media release.

"Interesting entrepreneurial developments have been taking place in the social sector such as microfinance, education and community services. As the TiE president, I will focus on issues of digital divide. We would also integrate the Mumbai chapter with our counterparts in Asia so that we can have an exchange of ideas and benefit from each other's strengths," he said.

"Entrepreneurship today should not be restricted to the Indian context, but should be viewed in the global sphere. Business should contribute to improving the quality of life of the people by enhancing the job opportunities and civic amenities available to them," Desai added.

Nishith is a lawyer, researcher, inventor, author and lecturer, and the founder of the research-based law firm, Nishith Desai Associates, having offices in Mumbai, Silicon Valley and Bangalore. The firm bagged the inaugural Indian Law Firm of the Year and Asian Law Firm of the Year 2001 (Pro Bono) awards presented by IFLR (a Euromoney publication).

Desai has also been actively participating in e-commerce and public policy initiatives of government, both at the central and state levels. He was on the Securities and Exchange Board of India Committees set up to evolve venture capital and stock option guidelines for India.

He has also assisted the state government of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka in formulating various legislations.
