TCS plans to recruit around 30,500 employees during the financial year 2007, of which about eight to ten per cent would be from Coimbatore.
"Coimbatore is emerging as a promising IT hub. We are planning to play an integral role in the further development of the local economy by working with academic institutions and helping them train and develop talent in the region," S Padmanabhan, executive vice-president and head (global human resources), TCS, said in a press conference.
The company already has a 100-seat engineering centre of excellence in Coimbatore, which caters to the needs of small and mid-sized engineering units in the region.
Also, it established a physical facilitation centre here when it kick started the MCA 21 programme, an online filing facility of statutory documents with the Registrar of Companies (RoC), earlier this year.
The company, which recruited around 800 people from Coimbatore last year through direct campus interviews alone, foresees an increase in the number this year.
"However, we cannot specify the number, as it all depends on the student-strength and their ability to get through the interview," Padmanabhan added.
Accordingly, TCS has entered into a tie-up with 15 colleges in the city, including institutions like P S G College of Technology, Government College of Technology and Coimbatore Institute of Technology, for recruitment.
The company is also holding talks with other colleges in the city to recruit students from non-engineering background as well.
"Around 50- 55 per cent of our total employee strength is from non-engineering disciplines. We recruit students from business schools (B -schools) and chartered accountancy institutes as well to cater to our banking and financial services vertical," he added.
The company has already announced its plans to set up a software development facility in Pune. TCS also plans to establish its operations in other tier II cities like Nagpur, Chandigarh and Bhubaneshwar. However, the verticals or sectors these facilities would deal with, was not yet decided, Padmanabhan added.
