Sun Microsystems India Pvt Ltd on Wednesday announced the 'Solaris University Challenge' that entails students from around the world to develop projects on Solaris 10 Operating System (OS) and OpenSolaris, Sun's open source project for Solaris developers.

"Participants in the challenge are encouraged to leverage Sun's $500 million R&D investment in operating systems to create innovative projects in, with or on Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris Operating Systems," Sun Microsystems vice president global education and research Kim Jones told reporters in Bangalore.

The winner would be given cash prize and Sun technology and up to $100,000 in technology for the associated university.

The Solaris 10 University Challenge was open for undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and IT staff at accredited universities in select participating countries. The contest details and information were available in http:/www.sun.com/Solaris10universitychallenge, she said.

One individual or team who wins would be given -- $5,000 plus a Sun Ultra 20 workstation. The winner's university would receive a credit with a retail value of $100,000 towards the purchase of Sun Microsystems products, she said.
