The Sensex opened above the 5,400-mark with a positive gap of eight points at 5,403. Though the sentiment was bullish, the index displayed a range-bound trend till mid-noon deals as the stocks moved in a narrow range due to steady buying support.
The markets witnessed hectic activity towards the closing hours, as a late correction in select old and new economy stocks saw the index slip below the 5,400-mark to an intra-day low of 5,369.
The sentiment, however, changed dramatically within a space of few minutes, as a late bout of sustained buying in Infosys, SBI, Reliance, Tata Power and Tisco saw the index revert back into the green to touch a high of 5,439.
The Sensex slightly came off from its intra-day high to settle with a gain of 19 points at 5,414. The Nifty, which touched a high of 1,721 during the intra-day trades, finally ended 12 points higher at 1,704.
Infosys attracted buying support today, and raked in 2.41% gains (Rs 121) to close at Rs 5,166. Satyam (up Rs 7 or 2.22% to Rs 306) also ended with decent gains. Wipro, however, slipped from higher levels to close at Rs 1,379 - down Rs 5.
SBI surged 3.30% (Rs 18) to close at Rs 566. BHEL and HPCL closed up a per cent each at Rs 549 (up Rs 5) and Rs 487 (up Rs 7), respectively. MTNL, however, was down a rupee at Rs 123.
Tisco notched up 4.35% gains (Rs 15) to Rs 372. Tata Power jumped 3.86% (Rs 13) to Rs 360.
ITC and Reliance ended off-highs with marginal gains each at Rs 1,070 (up Rs 3) and Rs 515 (up Rs 2), respectively. HLL, however, ended weak with a loss of 1.89% (Rs 3) at Rs 145.
L&T shot up 1.85% (Rs 10) to Rs 573. ACC moved up 1.93% (Rs 5) to Rs 246. Grasim and Gujarat Ambuja, however, ended off-gains to close at Rs 1,002 (down Rs 13 or 1.25%) and Rs 288 (down Rs 3 or 1.15%), respectively.
Tata Motors moved up 3.13% (Rs 14) to Rs 453. Hero Honda was up Rs 2 at Rs 464. Bajaj, however, lost 1.62% (Rs 14) to Rs 861.
HDFC Bank (up Rs 6 or 1.55% to Rs 364) ended with gains. Bharti Tele gained ground towards the closing hours, and advanced 4.57% (Rs 6) to Rs 145.
Cipla (down Rs 46 or 3.95% to Rs 1,127), Dr. Reddy's (down Rs 17 or 1.71% to Rs 970) and Ranbaxy (down Rs 21 or 2.30% to Rs 895) slumped sharply due to steep selling pressure.
Hindalco dropped 2.65% (Rs 33) to Rs 1,221. While HDFC slipped 1.36% (Rs 8) to Rs 602, ICICI Bank lost 2.83% (Rs 8) to Rs 270. ONGC also ended in the losers list at Rs 844 - down Rs 10 or 1.12%.
