Noted economist Samar Sen dead

Dr Samar Sen, one of India's foremost and earliest agricultural economists, passed away on Wednesday. He was 88. He had been ailing for some time.

Dr Sen is survived by his wife, Anita, and two sons, Abhijit and Pronab. Both are economists and working in the Planning Commission.

Dr Sen took his Ph D from the London School of Economics in 1946 and taught at Dacca University until Partition. He was the first member of the Indian Economic Service in 1938.

In 1948 he joined the ministry of agriculture. He later served in the Planning Commission as adviser before going to the World Bank as executive director in 1978.

After coming back to India Dr Sen chaired the RBI committee on taking the green revolution east (1985) and was later member of the Sarkaria Commission.
