It is a handicraft marvel, a dazzling sari threaded with silver and silk and costing Rs 200,000.

It is the centre of attraction for tourists and locals at the handicrafts exhibition currently on (till June 20) in the popular resort town of Shimla in Himachal Pradesh.

The maker of this colourful sari can be seen answering queries of curious visitors as many of the wide-eyed women touch and dream to own and drape this nine-yard magic garment.

"Instead of the ordinary thread I had used elaborate silver and silk thread for the embroidery. It had taken me a total of two years to get the sari ready, priced at Rs 200,000," explains a proud Shamim Ahmed, a traditional sari maker from Maharashtra. The sari is bright red with a peacock blue border.

"I've named it 'Pattan', the name of my village in Maharashtra, famous for its saris," Ahmed said. "I have displayed and sold my saris all over India and also in Paris," he said.

"I have already sold two saris each priced at over Rs 100,000. My next target would be to prepare an even more elaborate sari for Rs 400,000," Ahmed added.
