Reliance Industries Limited has been ranked number one amongst Indian companies in the 'long-term vision' and 'financial soundness' categories -- two important leadership criteria -- in the Far Eastern Economic Review's annual company survey: Review 200: Asia's Leading Companies.

In the 'financial soundness' category, Reliance retained its top ranking for the fifth year running, while in 'long term vision' category, Reliance improved its ranking to number one from the number two rank last year.

Reliance occupied the third position amongst Indian companies in the 'Companies that others try to emulate' category.

Reliance continues to occupy the second position in 'overall leadership.'

For the past six years, since 1997, Reliance has continued to be among the top two companies in the 'overall leadership.'

The survey, now in its 10th year, was conducted by A C Nielsen International Research (Hong Kong) and included 210 multinational corporations, which were chosen on the basis of their market capitalisation and the strength of their presence in the region.

In the 12 national surveys, between 25 and 37 local companies were selected to be ranked by readers.

Respondents were asked to rank companies using a scale of one to seven on their overall leadership performance. Those who did not recognise a company's name gave that company a score of zero. They were also asked to indicate which of the following criteria applied to listed companies:

  • High quality services or products;
  • Management with long-term vision;
  • Innovation while responding to customers' needs;
  • Financial soundness; and
  • A company that others try to emulate.

The Reliance Group, founded by the late Dhirubhai H Ambani, is India's largest business house with total revenues of Rs 65,000 crore (Rs 650 billion), cash profit of over Rs 7,500 crore (Rs 75 billion), net profit of over Rs 3,600 crore (Rs 36 billion) and exports of Rs 11,400 crore (Rs 114 billion). The group has total assets of Rs 69,000 crore (Rs 690 billion).

Its activities span petrochemicals, synthetic fibres, fibre intermediates, textiles, oil & gas, financial services, refining & marketing, power, insurance, telecom and infocom initiatives.

Reliance emerged as India's 'most admired business house,' for the second successive year in a Taylor Nelson Sofres - Mode (TNS-Mode) survey for 2002.

Reliance Industries Limited is India's largest private sector company on all major financial parameters with gross turnover of Rs 57,120 crore (Rs 571.20 billion), cash profit of Rs 6,643 crore (Rs 66.43 billion), net profit of Rs 3,243 crore (Rs 32.43 billion), net worth of Rs 27,812 crore (Rs 278.12 billion) and total assets of Rs 56,485 crore (Rs 564.85 billion).
