Qualcomm Incorporated, pioneer and world leader of code division multiple access digital wireless technology, has put India on its growth map.

Kanwalinder Singh, president, Qualcomm India said on wednesday that "the growth perspective of India is very high and we have put India, China and Latin America as the most emerging markets across the globe".

Refusing to divulge investment details in these markets, Singh said, "India gets extreme attention" from the company.

Qualcomm was also looking at acquisitions in India, he said.

The company acquired Spike Technologies Inc, a California-based firm with a chip design centre in Bangalore, earlier. Spike has a niche application and expertise to connect applications to the global network.

Singh said CDMA will play a dominant role in voice and data services because of its architecture compared with the GSM technology. Meanwhile, Qualcomm announced the opening of a BREW developer lab in Mumbai on Wednesday.

BREW is an acronym for binary runtime environment for wireless, the comprehensive platform that is taking on Sun Microsystems' Java in the mobile data applications segment.

One of the nine worldwide, the Mumbai lab will provide Indian applications developers -- including mobile games developers -- access to absolutely latest BREW-enabled handsets (that are in the testing phase worldwide and well before their commercial launch), software and testing tools.

Besides, the lab will also provide developers access to hands-on technical support from Qualcomm.

Singh said with Reliance Infocomm and Tata Teleservices Ltd focussing on blanket CDMA coverage across the country, Qualcomm was determined to get into rural applications, which include specific segmentations such as e-governance, distance education, health and medical and insurance.

Mahesh Prasad, president of the applications and solutions group for Reliance Infocomm said, "Qualcomm's new BREW developer lab in Mumbai furthers Reliance's efforts to nurture the developer community in India through the Dhirubhai Ambani Developer Programme which has already created exceptional market-relevant applications for the mobile space."
