Several companies in the British Midlands, extending from Milton Keynes to Birmingham and Nottingham, are getting their accounts maintained and set in order by group of professionals from PricewaterhouseCoopers in Kolkata, and the business is growing fast.

The outsourcing model, called the 'Midlands strategic sourcing project'  by PwC, started in 2002 and has already got some big middle market clients and is being managed by a team of 14 professionals.

"The project could be extended across the other five PwC business zones in the UK and could also be developed to handle new disciplines like assurance of all types of risks and assurance of transactions", said John Minards, head of assurance services, PwC Midlands.

It generated £1.6 million worth of business at last count. His group handled clients across a variety of industries including entertainment, media, leisure and consumer and industrial products.

PwC offices in Midlands and Kolkata would work together and leverage the amenities to further scale up the current project and initiate similar other opportunities in future, Minards indicated.

Minards described the Kolkata project as a win-win-win deal, as it secured skilled people for PwC in UK, generated business for the Indian operations and provided UK clients quality services.

The Indian team did require some training in UK accounting standards and also cultural orientation on how to interact with clients, but the core quality of team was excellent, he said. The number of professionals from India would increase in the coming years, he said.
