Anil Ambani, chief executive officer, Reliance Energy Limited, was given the prestigious Platts CEO of the year award while Reliance Industries Ltd, headed by his brother Mukesh, was adjudged the best petrochemicals company for 2004 in New York last week by Platts.

Nearly 400 top executives from over 20 countries spanning five continents gathered on December 10 to honour the energy industry's best of the best.

Platts, whose global energy awards programme is the most coveted, received over 200 nominations from energy companies.

The annual awards are given in 15 categories and are sponsored by Capgemini, HP and Business Week.

Reliance is the only company to have bagged two awards.

"This year's finalists and winners illustrate true innovative spirit and enduring commitment to employees, customers, shareholders and the industry as a whole," according to a company release.

For a CEO to win the honour, s/he needs to have consistently demonstrated the kind of clear vision, judgement, and motivational skills that transform and empower organisations.

The winner has to be a leader who is highly respected by both peers and competitors, admired and followed by employees, trusted by investors, and welcomed by the community.

"This is not an award for organisational effectiveness, or for revenue and profits growth -- though without those qualifications, entrants would barely be on the starting grid," Platts said.

"It is for recognition of courage, dedication, ethics, and the ability to bring about real change for the better at a company level, in the industry as a whole, and in the lives of employees."
