Printing of Permanent Account Numbers for Income Tax payers have been outsourced to various agencies, Rajya Sabha was told on Tuesday.

Work relating to receipt and data entry of PAN applications and printing of PAN cards have been outsourced to Unit Trust of India Technology Services Ltd, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said.

Similar work for PAN cards and Tax deduction/collection Account Number have been outsourced to National Securities Depositories Limited with effect from January, 2004, the minister said in a written reply.

Data entry of returns of income, wherever it was not possible to complete that work within four months of filing of the returns by the personnel of the Income Tax Department, has been outsourced from November, 2002, the minister said.

Security and housekeeping services have been outsourced at some places where there is insufficiency of staff, he added.

Informal discussions have taken place with the Income Tax Employees Federation and Gazetted Officers Association on outsourcing and other issues at different levels since 2002, he said.

On computerisation in the Income Tax department, the minister said substantial computer infrastructure has been provided in the department and further expansion and upgradation of the system is underway.
