In the midst of a sluggish growth and fears of a recession in the US, National Association for Software and Services Companies has chalked out six areas of emphasis in the financial year 2009.

The IT industry body also said the Indian IT sector would achieve the $60 billion target in the next two years.

  • The IT industry body will put thrust on six areas in the financial year 2009.  They include: community, collaboration, societal development, inclusivity, green IT, education and skill-building
  • Nasscom said the Indian IT would tide over the present lull in the market
  • Ganesh Natarajan, Chairman of Nasscom, ruled out long-term impact due to the ongoing US slowdown
  • Nasscom called for increased collaboration between the IT and BPO sectors

Natarajan attributed this confidence to 22-24 per cent growth rate in the IT sector. He said, "There is a temporary lull in the growth rate, but we are focussed on building the industry."

Natrajan added, "We are looking at enhancing the existing opportunities to add new revenues in the next five years through product, process and business model innovation. In addition to community and collaboration, the new thrust areas include societal development and inclusivity, green IT and education and skill-building."

About the global impact on the Indian economy, Natrajan said there might be some impact in the short-run but in the long-run there would not be much change.

Collaboration with industry associations such as auto-IT clusters and telecom-IT clusters will create more opportunities for the IT sector, he noted.

Indian IT-BPO revenues are estimated to grow by 33 per cent in the financial year 2008 and the exports are expected to cross $40 billion.

Som Mittal, President of Nasscom, said, "The industry has diversified and some sectors are growing faster in terms of process.  A growth rate of over 20 per cent during the slowdown is a good sign."

Pramod Bhasin, Vice-Chairman of Nasscom and President and CEO, Genpact, said the growth fast-shifting demographics and specialised services such as banking, retail and services will result in a stable growth for the Indian IT industry.

About the BPO sector, Bhasin said: "We now see the need for an increased collaboration between the IT and BPO sectors. We also plan to focus on education and security."

Raju Bhatnagar has been appointed as Vice-President of Nasscom.
