The Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd is offering a virtual calling card of Rs 500 with every new fixed-line connection from Wednesday, and has announced concessions for residential housing societies.

"The new scheme is intended at increasing connections and is a part of our marketing initiatives," MTNL sources told said in Mumbai on Tuesday.

The VCC can be used for both STD and ISD calls, they said.

They did not say how many additional subscribers were expected, even though MTNL expects 'noteworthy' increase in connections.

Meanwhile, the company, which operates in Delhi and Mumbai, has announced concessions for residential housing societies, which include unlimited free calls within residential societies, in addition to a free telephone at the security gate of the residential complex.

However, the telephone would have only free incoming facility, they said, these facilities are provided under Closed User Group, Cosmos or Centrex systems.

Cosmos and Centrex systems are where the exchange acts as the virtual EPABX for the residential society.

MTNL has also slashed CUG rental to Rs 50 per month within an exchange area, they said.
