Pharmaceutical major Matrix Laboratories has emerged as the fastest wealth creator while state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation has topped the biggest wealth creator list over the last five years, according to the Motilal Oswal annual wealth creation study.

India's biggest wealth creator? ONGC

The latest 'MOSt-Inquire 100' study identified the top 100 wealth creators among companies that have added at least Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion) to their market capitalisation during 2000-05, after adjusting for dilution, it said.

Matrix Lab sprinted ahead of competition to become the fastest enhancer of capital, posting a market capitalisation of CAGR of 167 per cent, followed by Aban Loyd Chiles Offshore Ltd (146%), Gujarat NRE Coke (140%), Sterling Biotech (120%) and Jubilant Organosys (104%).

With creation of nearly three times more wealth {Rs 1,06,531 crore (Rs 1065.31 billion) than IOC which added Rs 36,545 crore (Rs 365.45 billion) to its market capitalisation, ONGC has emerged as winner in the biggest wealth creator category.

Reliance Industries {Rs 34,862 crore (Rs 348.62 billion)}, SBI {Rs 23,991 crore (Rs 239.91 billion) and SAIL {Rs 22,738 crore (Rs 227.38 billion)} were among the five biggest wealth creators.

Infosys was the only IT company that made it to the club of top 100 wealth creators between 2000 and 2005.

The awards was decided by 20 million investors of the Indian capital market, it said.

Wealth creation trends further revealed that in the list of top 100, there were 30 public sector undertakings, which by accounting for about half of the wealth created (50.4%) matched the strength of the 70 contributors from the private sector.

Commodity companies accounted for 65.6 per cent of the wealth created by top 100 companies, while companies manufacturing branded products accounted for 30.1 per cent of the wealth created.

The study findings said in contrast to the 1990s when the multi-national companies contributed nearly 40 per cent of the wealth created, in 2000-05 their contribution was restricted to 6.8 per cent of the wealth, with 11 MNCs in the top 100 wealth creators list.

While the BSE Sensex declined in three out of five years, the study said, the wealth creators fell only in one year and added that the wealth creators index outperformed the BSE Sensex in all the five years.
