World-famous Indian mangoes have made an initial breakthrough in the growing Chinese market, challenging rivals from Pakistan, Thailand and the Philippines, official sources said in Beijing.
"The initial response was very good and it has encouraged us to come in a big way next year," general manager of the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, A S Rawat said.
Indian mangoes were commercially launched for the first time in the Chinese capital Beijing as well in the communist nation's commercial capital, Shanghai during the weekend. Since the Chinese on-site inspections, arranging logistics and paperwork consumed long time, India could launch only three mango varieties at this year's promotion-cum-sale.
Thus, Alphonso, the king of mangoes, could not be launched in China this time as the season (March-June) was over. However, the Chinese customers could taste Chausa, Dussheri and Langra varieties, mainly from Uttar Pradesh.
"The response from Chinese customers was very good. We will come next year to China in a much bigger way," additional director, UP Agriculture Marketing Board, Chakrapani said.
He said Indian mangoes, known the world-over as the best, would definitely outbid their rivals from Thailand and the Philippines.
Hundreds of Chinese buyers thronged the sales counters to purchase Indian mangoes despite the steep price of yuan 12.8 for 500 gms.
