Karnataka attracts Rs 8,253 cr in IT/BT sectors

Karnataka, the leading exporter of software and IT services in the country, has continued to attract global majors to invest in the IT sector this fiscal.

For the first six months of the present fiscal, the state has seen an encouraging trend in terms of investments in the sector.During the six-month period-ended September 2010, the approved investment in the IT sector has touched Rs 8,253 crore (Rs 82.53 billion).

This includes Rs 375 crore by software technology park units, Rs 327 crore by foreign equity companies, Rs 1,140 crore by hardware units and Rs 308 crore by BPO companies, the economic survey of 2010-11 released by the state government ahead of the annual budget for 2011-12 revealed, here on Thursday.

In addition, the approved investment in SEZ IT/ITeS units in 2010-11 (till September 2010) amounted to Rs 6,103 crore.

Karnataka is home to 60 per cent of the country's biotech units. During 2009-10, six projects were cleared through the state level single window clearance committee with an investment of Rs 5,209.30 crore.

According to the economic survey, Karnataka enjoys a unique position in India in the exports of electronics and computer software. In 2009-10, the exports of electronics and computer software from the state accounted for as much as 40 per cent of the country's exports. Further, Karnataka's share in India's total exports of information and communication technology products has remained higher than 25 per cent since 2005-06, the survey report highlighted.

In 2009-10, Karnataka's exports amounted to about Rs 1,42,871.41 crore or about 13.3 per cent of the country's overall exports.

Commodities which have more than 5 per cent share in Karnataka's exports are electronics and computer software at 63.5 per cent, petroleum and petroleum products at 7.7 per cent and gem & jewellery at 12.2 per cent.
