Employment in the organised sector has gone down from 2.77 crore (27.7 million) in 2001 to 2.70 crore (27 million) in 2003, Lok Sabha was informed on Monday.

The last survey carried out by the National Sample Survey Organisation in 1999-2000 found that the unemployment rate on current daily status basis had gone up from approximately 6.03 per cent in 1993-94 to 7.32 per cent in 1999-2000, Labour Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao said in a written reply.

Observing that employment in the organised sector constituted only seven per cent of the total employment in the country, he said a marginal decline in the organised sector employment "may not have a significant impact on the overall employment rate".

It would also not significantly affect the overall growth of gross domestic product, regional imbalances and economy of the poor and populous states, Rao said adding the government had introduced the National Rural Employment Guarantee Bill in Parliament to provide for 100 days of employment in a year to poor families in rural areas.
