Continuing its hiring spree, Infosys Technologies has recruited 1,739 techies during the first quarter (April-June) of the current fiscal year (2003-04).
As a result, the total employee strength of the Bangalore-based global IT major has shot up to 17,095 by June from 15,356 at the end of March 2003.
Though the gross addition was 2,175 employees, including 303 laterals, 436 techies have left the company during the quarter under review.
"At an attrition rate of 7.9 per cent, the employees who left Infosys were those with 1-3 years experience, mostly for pursuing higher studies and better opportunities. The retention level among the laterals is higher," a company spokesperson told the media in Bangalore on Thursday.
According to the company's financial statement for the first quarter, the number of software professionals has increased to 15,623 from 14,001 from the previous quarter. Around 516 techies belong to the banking business unit.
During the previous quarter (January-March), the company hired 1,298 techies.
The utilisation rate excluding trainees increased to 83.9 per cent from 82.1 per cent in the last quarter and 80.2 per cent in the corresponding quarter of the last fiscal year.
"Our utilisation has further improved during the quarter. There has been a change in the onsite-offshore mix due to a higher component of offshore work. The strong growth in volumes has exceeded our initial expectations," said S D Shibulal, company's board member and head of worldwide customer delivery.
The company's revenues from onsite operations, however, declined to 54.2 per cent from the previous quarter of 55.5 per cent, while offshore revenue has gone up to 45.8 per cent from 44.5 per cent, respectively.
