India Inc's order books swell

Corporate India, the central and state governments and the state electricity boards have been in a spending mode with a host of new projects coming up over the last year.

Fifteen Indian companies have informed the stock exchanges in the first three months of the current calendar year that they have bagged contracts worth Rs 5,650 crore (Rs 56.5 billion). Companies usually advise the stock exchanges of any significant orders received.

The orders include contracts for setting up turnkey projects, construction of power plants, erecting oil platforms, railway overbridges and other heavy engineering projects.

Technology firms reported higher orders for IT solutions, and exporters have advised the exchanges of bigger export orders.

Engineering giant Larsen & Toubro bagged orders worth Rs 2,270 crore (Rs 22.7 billion) in the last three months from a host of sources, including the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation, ONGC and from the Union government.

It also received a $30 million order from Gasco of the United Arab Emirates. Siemens bagged two orders worth Rs 713 crore (Rs 7.13 billion) in these three months: one from the railway ministry and the other from the Diesel Locomotive Works, Varanasi.

IVRCL Infrastructure, which had an order book position of Rs 1,500 crore (Rs 15 billion) till December 2003, added Rs 435 crore (Rs 4.35 billion) in orders in the last three months.

These include a Rs 157 crore (Rs 1.57 billion) order for construction of seven broad gauge single line tunnels on the Katra-Laole section of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link project. Gammon India bagged four orders for water supply, cooling towers and two railway overbridges.

This includes a Rs 80 crore (Rs 800 million) project for erecting railway overbridges linking Santacruz and Chembur under Mumbai Urban Transport Project, a Rs 131 crore (Rs 1.31 billion) water supply project from Gujarat Water Supply and Sewerage Board and a Rs 52 crore (Rs 520 million) order from Bhel for Bellary ND cooling tower and chimney.

Jyoti Structure bagged two orders worth Rs 103 crore (Rs 1.03 billion). Alstom Projects received an order valued at around Rs 500 crore (Rs 5 billion) to build a 228 Mw plant for GVK Industries Ltd in Andhra Pradesh.
