The government on Thursday said it would open up to 20 IIITs across the country in partnership with the industry, for which a sum of Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion) has been approved.

Planning Commission member secretary Rajeeva Ratna Shah said the National Development Council (NDC) has approved setting up of the new IIITs, which will be co-funded by industry associations and other business houses.

Shah said industry associations that have a clear-cut vision for setting up the institutes would be entitled to receive a part of the approved Rs 100 crore.

"The government is also working towards ensuring broadband accessibility to almost every citizen in the country covering 97 per cent of geographical area by 2012," he said.

The two policy decisions were approved by NDC at its meeting in New Delhi under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, he added.
