Vinod Rai to be new CAG

Last updated on: December 17, 2007 17:21 IST
Financial Services Secretary Vinod Rai will be the new Comptroller and Auditor General of India, country's top official audit watchdog.

Rai replaces V N Kaul, who will be joining the audit advisory committee of the United Nations. His appointment will be effective from the date he assumes charge of the office, an official statement said on Monday.

A 1972-batch Indian Administrative Service officer of Kerala cadre, Rai was to retire on May 31 next year. Now, he is expected to take charge of the new post after Kaul demits office.

Kaul was to demit office on January 8, but is likely to join the newly-established UN Audit Advisory Committee
on the new year day, sources said.

Mooted by the World Summit 2005, the Independent Audit Advisory Committee of the United Nations aims at improving accountability of the UN Secretariat toward member states.

Rai was earlier Managing Director of Kerala State Co-operative Marketing Federation from 1977 to 1980. Since 1980, he has held various positions in different ministries.

Prior to taking over as Financial Services Secretary, he was additional secretary in the banking division of finance ministry. He holds a post-graduate degree in economics from the University of Delhi and in public administration from the Harvard University.
