Hyundai Motor India Limited plans to set up its own facility at the Chennai port for parking its vehicles for shipment, a top Hyundai official said on Wednesday.

Managing director of HMIL Heung Soo Lheem said the company was conducting feasibility study for such a facility as the present capacity of the Chennai port was inadequate. Lheem also said the Ennore port was also another option before the company.

The company was setting up a second engine transmission facility at an investment of over $600 million and would roll out about three lakh engines once the facility was ready, he said.

To a query, Lheem said of the company's final goal of a total capacity of six lakh cars from the Chennai unit, 50 per cent would be earmarked for the domestic market while the other half would be exported.

HMIL has over 8,000 direct and indirect employees. Once the new unit, which was currently being constructed at its existing facility was completed, the company would add an additional workforce of 3,000 people while the engine facility would employ a minimum of 1,000 people, he said.
