India, Egypt to cooperate in healthcare

India and Egypt are set to sign a memorandum of understanding on transfer of technology in the field of health care.

A delegation led by Egyptian Minister of Health and Population Dr Hatem El Gabali met Union Minister of Health Anbumani Ramadoss on Wednesday and discussed about the reforms in health care and pharmaceutical sector in both the countries.

"We are looking forward for mutual cooperation between Egyptian public sector and Indian health care companies. We want Indian pharmaceutical companies to invest in Egypt as we have a wide pharmacy market," Gabali said.

He said that among 8000 registered medicine companies in Egypt, a miniscule 38 are from India.

"Egypt has a $2 billion medicine market and of this India contributes for just $25
million.We feel this is very less and progress has to be made in the field," he said.

India has a very strong research and application mechanism in the medical health care sector and the Egypt is interested in learning the phenomenon of transfer of technology from research laboratory to production companies,
he said.

"We have done a great progress in the area of family planning, population control and eradication of polio. We have agreed to share the methods with the Indian companies," Gabali said.

Both sides will work in the field of combating infection, reform in health sector, transfer of vaccine technology and Information Technology area.
