Goa expects to pool about 21.5 MW of power from the 'Ratnagiri Combined Cycle Power Project' to meet its rising electricity demands, state power minister Alexio Sequiera said.

"In all, 21.5 MW power is allocated from Ratnagiri combined cycle power project, for which the power purchase agreement is to be executed with Ratnagiri Gas and Power Project Limited," Sequiera, told the State Legislative Assembly last week.

In a written reply tabled on the floor during the ongoing monsoon session, the power minister said the formalities to sign PPA with Ratnagiri Gas and Power Project Limited are in progress.

This pact is likely to help Goa to meet the increasing power requirement which currently varies from 280 MW to 440 MW.

Replying to a power forecast of the state in nearĀ future, Sequiera quoted figures by central electric authority which pegs Goa's average demand upto 458 MW by 2011-12.

Sequiera said that in addition to the Ratnagiri allocation, Goa expects to earn 25 mw from Sipat plant once it goes into commercial operations.

"Goa has also been given an allocation of 200 MW power from Akaltara Ultra mega power project in Chhatisgarh and thecommitment advance of Rs 2 crore (Rs 20 million) has already been paid," he said, adding the state is encouraging co-generation plants.

"Already two co-generation plants are operational in the state, one is in North Goa of capacity 30 MW and other in South Goa of capacity 12 MW," he added.

The state government has also forwarded proposal to the forest ministry for tapping hydro potential.

"The memorandum of understanding is signed with Gas Authority of India Ltd, for laying a gas pipeline to Goa. The power generation with gas as a fuel is being explored," he said.
