Doordarshan to offer 17 DTH channels

Doordarshan would introduce 17 more private free-to-air channels on its Direct-To-Home service in the next six months.

On the technological aspects of Doordarshan's cost-effective DTH service, D P singh, director of DD's satellite design section, said "17 more private channels would be introduced in the DTH service in the next six months".

At present, DD's bouquet offers 33 channels, including 19 from the Doordarshan stable and 14 private ones, while DTH could carry up to 50 channels.

DD has received proposals from private players and will give permission to 17 more in the next six months taking the total to 50, Singh said.

DD has sanctioned for installation 10,000 ku-band dish receiver systems in the country out of which 6,308 were already installed in different states of the country.

So far, 1716 DTH systems were installed in Madhya Pradesh, 1367 in Karnataka, 1077 in Rajasthan, 986 in Gujarat and 295 in Chhatisgarh among others, he said adding, in Jammu and Kashmir 500 DTH systems were handed over to the Army for installation.

Singh said that with increase in number of subscribers, the cost of a receiver system would come down from the present Rs 3000-3500.
