Bharat Forge Chairman and Managing Director Baba N Kalyani is Business Standard's CEO of the year. The award goes to him for his role in the transformation of Bharat Forge from an ugly local duckling into a globally competitive swan.

Bharat Forge is now the world's lowest cost forgings company and Kalyani is confident that it will become the world's largest forgings company soon.

The 56-year-old mechanical engineer from the Birla Institute of Technology, Pilani, says his ambition is to see Bharat Forge at the forefront of making "Made in India" a global brand in the automotive industry.

The list of previous winners of the BS CEO of the year award includes Tata group chairman Ratan Tata, Reliance group chairman Mukesh Ambani, Hero group chairman Brij Mohan Lal Munjal and Infosys' NR Narayana Murthy.

This year, BS 1000 has introduced new categories of awards, to recognise the diversity in India's corporate world: Star company in the public sector, Star company among unlisted firms, and Star company in small and medium enterprises.

Oil and Natural Gas Corp gets the Star Company, Public Sector, award not merely for being the most profitable company in India, but also for its global efforts and its success in turning around MRPL.

Hyundai Motors bags the Star company, Unlisted Firms, prize for its success in becoming the second largest car maker and the largest exporter of passenger cars in a short time.

Mercator Lines has been chosen as the Star Company for the SME sector, with a 100 per cent compounded annual growth rate of net profits in the last three years.
