Reliance Group chairman Mukesh Ambani on Friday said that India had the unprecedented opportunity to leverage a large young population with information technology skills, which would make it the fountainhead of a new world of technology.

"The unprecedented opportunity to leverage a large young population with IT will make India the fountainhead of a new world of technology, information and knowledge," Ambani told participants at a three-day technology festival - SYNAPSE 2004 - at Dhirubhai Ambani Institute for Information and Communication Technology.

Advising the student community that their abilities in learning, teaching and research will help shape India's future, he said, "We must allow knowledge to build and further build upon itself in an unending manner.

"India has about a billion people and our challenge is to make the world see them as a billion brains," Ambani, who was making his address through video conference said.

He asserted that the group was fully committed to bring about this larger vision through DA-IICT and Reliance Infocomm, which according to him, played on the convergence of information technology and communications. It was an initiative, which was unparalleled anywhere in the world.

Ambani said Reliance Infocomm represented an overarching digital infrastructure for India reaching out to 1100 towns and cities and covered a spectacularly wide range.

Besides empowering of every individual business and organisation in the country, the company spelt an opportunity for India to be a global player in the information and communication market.
