Leading online business house Amazon.com Inc on Wednesday announced its plan to open a customer service centre in Hyderabad.

Set to be operational in the second half of 2005, this centre will offer additional email support to its customers, according to a PR Newswire-Asianet release from Hyderabad.

The Hyderabad centre will be the seventh of the customer service centres of Amazon.com Inc and provide 100 new jobs.

"As more of our customers come from outside the United States, it is important that we have customer service representatives available to respond to our customers, regardless of the time zone they might be in.

"The additional resources provided by our new Hyderabad office will enable us to serve our customers more quickly and effectively," said Amazon's director of India customer service operations Pritam Baxi.

A Fortune 500 company, Amazon.com, Inc. offers through its online store a wide variety of new and used products in different segments such as beauty, health and personal care, jewelry and music, toys and baby, and home and garden.

The company has registered net sales worth $1.90 billion in the first quarter of 2005, compared with $1.53 billion in the first quarter of 2004, an increase of 24 per cent.
