Low-cost carriers are planning to form an apex organisation, they are apprehensive that Jet Airways will enjoy monopoly if its strategic alliance with Air Sahara goes through.
Although no formal meeting took place on Tuesday, the airlines informally discussed the idea in Mumbai.
Air Deccan managing director R Gopinath said airlines should have a common platform to express their views.
"We are proposing a national industry body for all airlines on the lines of Nasscom. It should not be restricted to no-frill or low-cost carriers," Gopinath said.
Executives of low cost-carrier SpiceJet welcomed the move to have a common platform to voice their concern to appropriate authorities.
"This is a new concept and we support the initiative. We are ready to co-operate and contribute to realise the concept," they said.
Earlier, GoAir managing director Jeh Wadia said it was always "good to stand united".
He had told Business Standard a few days ago: "There could be seat-sharing agreements among us. Airline companies with less number of aircraft cannot afford to have too many bases for parking. Equal distribution of infrastructure is a indeed concern."
