Thanks to Yash Raj Films' Chak De India, the 2008 Olympics will see a 50 per cent increase in ad spend from India. Traditionally, India spends up to Rs 20 crore (Rs 200 million) on the biggest sporting event in the world.

"Globally, there is an upsurge in the money spent on the Olympics. The effect will now be seen in India as well, with marketers betting more," said Pratab Bose, CEO, Ogilvy & Mather India. At a global level, the 29th Olympics, which will take place between August 8 and August 24, 2008 in Beijing, is likely to attract the highest ad spends to date.

According to a report by global media service agency ZenithOptimedia, the Beijing Olympic Games will help lift television's share of the global ad market to a record 38.2 per cent in 2008 and the ad spend on internet will grow nine times when compared with other mediums.

The Beijing Olympics has more than 10 worldwide partners, 11 Beijing partners, 10 sponsors for the event and more than 20 suppliers. According to industry experts, the Olympics, is one of the costliest sporting events in the world.

"Each sponsor slot for the event has been booked for Rs 80 crore (Rs 800 million) and each partner slot has been booked for approximately Rs 200 crore (Rs 2 billion)," said an industry expert.'
