Wal-Mart awards 9 Indian companies

World's largest retailer Wal-Mart has awarded nine Indian companies for outstanding supplier accomplishments under the Wal-Mart International Supplier of the Year Award for 2006.

"The nine Indian companies across the country were among the 53 winners," of the award recently held in China, a company statement said in Mumbai.

Welspun, won the trophy for sustainability-environmental protection as well as for the quality of goods manufactured and the company's commitment to on-time delivery, it said.

The other Indian companies that were awarded were Leela Scottish Lace, Richa group, JJ Mills and Kaytee Corporation for apparel; Elegant for diamond jewellery; Abhishek Industries, Abhitex and JVS for towels and home textiles.

The award in its fifth year, is based on performance of companies on a number of parameters such as quality, price performance and adherence to Wal-Mart's philosophy and beliefs, it said.

"This award highlights our compliance with Wal-Mart's standards for suppliers," Welspun India Joint Managing Director Rajesh Mandawewala said in the statement.
