Your morning omelet may cost you less in the coming days with the prices of eggs showing a downward trend.

Prices of eggs and chicken are bound to fall as the poultry industry expects an increase in supply.

Egg prices may soften with the increased arrival of new production early this month, National Egg Coordination Committee office-bearers said.

Prices are likely to come down to around Rs 150 per 100 eggs during August-September when the supply will be at peak.

The current rate is Rs 160 for 100 eggs. In the north, retail prices are hovering around Rs 28 per dozen as against Rs 18-20 per dozen in corresponding period last year.

The prices of chicken meat also soared to Rs 100 per kg against Rs 70 per kg last year.

Maize prices currently hover around Rs 800 per quintal, giving little scope for poultry farmers to reduce prices.

Poultry sector accounts for the highest demand for maize at about seven million tonne, followed by human consumption at 3.6 million tonne.

While maize contributes 60% of the poultry feed, soya comprises 25% of the total feed.
