Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday asked the Department of Telecom to commission a study for working out a unified tax structure for the sector.

At present, total levies in the telecom sector, including the annual revenue share, that the companies pay to the government stand between 28-30 per cent, which operators feel is very high.

The annual revenue share ranges between 6-10 per cent of their revenues depending upon the circle where they operate.

"I will request DoT to constitute a committee and come out with recommendations for unified rate structure," Chidambaram said while presenting the Budget for 2007-08.

A unified tax structure has been a long-standing demand of telecom companies.
