Reliance to launch IndiaMobile service on Wednesday

A Correspondent in Mumbai | January 14, 2003 18:57 IST

Reliance Infocomm Limited, the new economy initiative of the Reliance Group, will launch its pan-India mobile service -- Reliance IndiaMobile -- on January 15.

The rollout of the Reliance IndiaMobile services will begin with the demonstration of services and the registration of customers in all major towns.

The company has enrolled over 50,000 Dhirubhai Ambani Entrepreneurs across the country, a media release from the company said on Tuesday.

"We are overwhelmed by the interest expressed by people in the Reliance IndiaMobile service and the Dhirubhai Ambani Pioneer Offer," said Reliance Industries chairman and managing director, Mukesh Ambani, in the release.

Reliance IndiaMobile is the first mobile service to be launched on CDMA 2000 1 x technology platform in India.

It has abilities to combine voice and data delivery, which are being leveraged with advanced handsets with computing capability.

This would place India ahead of the rest of the world, the Reliance release claims.

"CDMA 2000 1x technology delivers the highest voice capacity, leading to excellent voice quality -- less call drops, reduced background noise, higher voice clarity and minimal interference with other electronic devices," the release said.

"Reliance IndiaMobile service will bring not just a mobile phone service, but a plethora of mobile applications to the lives of millions of Indians in a very affordable manner," said Ambani.

Reliance IndiaMobile's call rate of 40 paise per minute is the lowest telephony rate in the country, whether it is mobile or fixed line, local or STD.

The real cost of a call is lowered further with billing at 15 seconds pulse rate and free incoming calls, the release said.

Reliance IndiaMobile also offers the lowest STD rates in the country at 40 paise per minute (Reliance IndiaMobile to Reliance IndiaMobile call) under the Dhirubhai Ambani Pioneer Scheme.

"In the case of STD calls made from Reliance IndiaMobile handsets to external networks, like Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd, the rate will increase only to the extent of interconnect rates charged by the external network," the release said.

The applications suite that the Reliance service will offer includes video and audio streaming, picture messaging, news tickers and magazines, games, e-mail, SMS and Internet connectivity, the media release added.

"Customers will have access to hundreds of songs, video clips, news broadcast, movie trailers and cricket commentaries. Users will be able to browse, view and save pictures and personalise them as wallpapers, apart from sending these pictures to other Reliance IndiaMobile users," it said.

Users can also get the latest stock prices on the Reliance IndiaMobile phone and can buy and sell shares while on the move.

Other features include an on-line telephone directory; availability of a variety of ring tones from a repertoire of regional, western, devotional and kids music; phone bills; city information, et cetera.

"All these applications have been developed by Reliance Infocomm at its 'application development laboratories' at the Dhirubhai Ambani Knowledge City in Navi Mumbai on the Reliance application platform for software developers," the media release said.

"The Reliance IndiaMobile service launch is the largest and most complex launch of mobile telephony combined with computing anywhere in the world. It signals the first chapter of a 'new way of life' ushered in by Reliance Infocomm and would contribute to India's march towards global leadership," said Ambani in the release.
