November 19, 2007

Yesterday, roughly two lakh students took CAT 2007. It was the largest number of CAT participants ever.

So how was the exam paper? Which sections were difficult and which ones were easy?

With so many aspirants, and such stiff compeition, what are the IIM cut-offs for each section?

And most importantly, how did you fare? Which institutes will give you a call?

Gejo Sreenivasan, an MBA expert with IMS, discussed CAT 2007 in a rediff.com chat, yesterday, November 18.

For those of you who missed the chat, here's part one of the transcript:

Ajit asked, Sir, MAy I know what is the cut off for IIM?

Gejo Sreenivasan answers,
The estimated cut-offs are:

Quant : 25 - 28
DI : 30 - 33
Verbal : 30 - 33

Overall cut off for 1-2 IIM Call is around 100,
3-4 is around 110
5-6 is around 120

suk asked, i have done around 90 marks questions with 90% accuracy..? what are my chances?

Gejo Sreenivasan answers,
Pretty decent... if those 90 is spread across all three sections, i am sure you will end with IIM Calls

Governor asked, QA-47, VA - 55, DI-60 .. what can I expect?

Gejo Sreenivasan answers,
If these are your scores, you can expect calls from most of the IIMs if not all.

amresh asked, hello sir , as per the solution availaible across different websites my scores are q-66, v-56, di-44.what are my chances

Gejo Sreenivasan answers,
Amresh, You have done really well.. You must expect calls. I suggest that you start your prep for GD & PI.

acer asked, sir, kindly tell me the approximate cut off in each of the sections. also the descent colleges for a percentile above 90. thanks

Gejo Sreenivasan answers,
90 percentile + will fetch calls from IMT, TAPMI. NIRMA, SPJIMR(based on your profile), NITIE etc.

riteshrajput asked, sir, i expect to get 90-94%ile...how is FORE school of management, Delhi....shall i go for it. i am chemical engineer....i am fresher....i also do not expect to have drastic improvement in CAT performance in future..what should i do?

Gejo Sreenivasan answers,
As a chemical engineer, I am sure that you will get a decent job and therefore it is worth waiting for one more year.. remember MBA is an investment and make an informed decision

Nidhi asked, Guys pls help me..i hav buterfly in my stomach.. QA-47, VA-55, DI-42... Checked in one site.. wat are the chances ???

Gejo Sreenivasan answers,
Nidhi... I would say that your performance should fetch calls from the IIMs. So relax for a couple of days and start with your GD/PI prep.

Nageshwar asked, I have solved all the questions but I am not confident @ 30 % questions. R there any chances for me to clear cut off

Gejo Sreenivasan answers,
Solving all questions is great, but hopefully you have maintained a decent level of accuracy. You can get a fair idea of how you have performed using the answer key that will be put up on the IMS web site by today evening.

confusedyetabt cat asked, how much score is needed for non iim's institutes

Gejo Sreenivasan answers,
As per last year, the percentile score needed for some of the non IIM institutes are as follows.. MDI - 95%, TAPMI, NITIE - 92% IMT - 90%, MICA 90%... If you have scored around 85 to 90 in this CAT you must be touching 90 to 92 percentile.

mic asked, what is your opinion about the quant section this year?

Gejo Sreenivasan answers,
The quant section was tougher than last year. The questions needed a fair level of reasoning ability. Some of the questions were based on slightly tougher concepts. Also, there were quite a few questions that could be solved using the options. Selection os the right questions was key to do well in this section

ayushi asked, how much marks will comprise of above 85 percentile

Gejo Sreenivasan answers,
around 80.

Ashit asked, sir could u tell me especially for some one like me who's not had a great cat paper will it be a feasible option for me to take up ibsat 2007 for ICFAI and how would you rate icfai hyderabad in terms of placements

Gejo Sreenivasan answers,
I may not be able to comment on the ICFAI placements... However, let me answer your question in a different perspective.. You cannot change your goal because of the score in the CAT as your objective of taking the CAT is to get into one of the top B-Schools in India.. What you need to assess is whether an institute is good for YOU or not...

winner asked, Hello Mr. Gejo, 12 Quant - 36 Verbal and 36 Di... do u think I can get a call from MICA IMT and IFMR?

Gejo Sreenivasan answers,
My first take is that you stand a fair chance of getting a call from these institutes based on your overall performance.

Sun asked, Hi Gejo, 25-30 in all will I get a call from BIM trichy

Gejo Sreenivasan answers,
Sun.. 25 to 30 seems less for BIM trichy.. I suggest that you now focus on other tests like XAT, FMS etc.. There are quite a few institute through the XAT and you have a good two months before the test..

shreshth asked, helo sir.... what do u think about the rc section??was it not little tough....ll the cut off for quanta section be above than 50???

Gejo Sreenivasan answers,
The RC passages were relatively easy compared to last year. The onus was on understanding the entire passage, and not parts of it.The questions were inferential and reasoning based. Some of the options were too close for comfort.

MKG asked, Hello Sir...How are you! Mahesh here...Remember me...I went to IIMA in 2004 (after CAT retest). Was really excited to see you on TV Today.

Gejo Sreenivasan answers,
Thanks:-)

sanjana asked, sir i am a TIME student and i m expecting around QA-29,DI-33,EU-33... wat r my chances??

Gejo Sreenivasan answers,
You have performed very well...now you need to focus on the next stage of your preparation for GD and PI.

winner100 asked, Which are the institutes which give imporatnce to English (VA) cut off other than Alliance B'lore?

Gejo Sreenivasan answers,
Institutes like MICA, SIMC and TISS lay a premium on the VA performance in CAT and other tests.

slam asked, i have a 27 in quant. what sort of sectional percentile can i expect?

Gejo Sreenivasan answers,
You will definitely be around the 90+ sectional percentile.

nisha asked, sir i m expecting arnd QA-25,DI-30,VA-30...

Gejo Sreenivasan answers,
Nisha... Your scores are on the borderline for the IIM Call. Since you have performed consistently across the 3 sections you have decent chance. You must get calls from the good non-IIM institutes

rajivranjit asked, Sir, I am expecting around 40 in quant, 28 in DI and 52 in English. What kind of Institutes can I look forward to? Which are the institutes that I should appy to?

Gejo Sreenivasan answers,
Dear Rajiv, You are on the borderline for getting a call. I think as a back-up option, you should apply to the good Non-IIM institutes like MDI, SPJAIN, NITIE, TAPMI, MICA< IMT Ghaziabad through your CAT scores.

slam asked, @gejo, my point was this. i have a 45+ in each of the other two sections, and a 27 in qa. is this score enough to meet the demands of iima or b, going by sectional as well as overall percentiles?

Gejo Sreenivasan answers,
It is difficult to assess that since each institute has different criteria for arriving at the cut-off. As per the past CAT data, you could clear the cut off of either IIM A and IIM B.
