Vinay KumarLeg-spinner Shreyas Gopal claimed the first hat-trick of his career to guide Ranji Trophy champions Karnataka to a convincing innings and 222 runs victory over Rest of India in the final of the Irani Trophy, in Bangalore, on Wednesday.

Gopal (5 for 35) also registered his best bowling figures in the process, while skipper R Vinay Kumar scalped four wickets for 70 runs, as Rest of India were dismissed for 183 runs in the second innings, in 57.5 overs, on the fourth day of the match at the Chinnaswamy stadium.

Gopal picked three wickets in three balls in the 58thover to bring down the curtains on Rest of India's dismal batting in the second innings.

He first dismissed well-set batsman Baba Aparajith, having him caught by Stuart Binny at long-off with the third delivery of the 58th over, and then disturbed the timbers of Ashoke Dinda and Pankaj Singh with two perfect googlies.

Karnataka skipper Vinay Kumar's four wickets in the second innings saw him finish the match with impressive match figures of 11 for 82.

Resuming their second innings at 114 for 3, Rest of India's middle and lower middle order fell like a deck of cards in the face of disciplined bowling by Gopal and Vinay Kumar. Their last seven batsmen could add just 69 runs.

Aparajith, who resumed on the overnight score of 42, was the lone bright spot for Rest, labouring his way to 66 off 162 balls, even as the other batsmen failed to put up a fight in the face of some disciplined bowling by the Karnataka bowlers.

Rest of India struggled throughout their second innings and only three batsmen -- Aparajith, Kedar Jadhav (44) and wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik (27), who fetched an unexpected Rs 12.5 crore from Delhi Daredevils in the IPL player's auction, got into double digit scores.

The platform for Karnataka's innings victory, however, was set up by their batsmen.

Stuart Binny (122), C M Gautam (122), Karun Nair (92) and Ganesh Satish (84) played impressive knocks to help them amass a mammoth 606 in the first innings in reply to Rest of India's 201.
