A division bench of Andhra Pradesh high court has posted an appeal filed by former Indian cricket captain Mohammed Azharuddin challenging the judgment of the trial court refusing to set aside the life ban imposed on him by the Board of Control for Cricket in India for January 7.

Azharuddin also sought an interim direction to the BCCI to allow him to play domestic cricket. The appeal came up before the division bench, comprising Justice B Prakash Rao and Justice C H S R K Prasad on Thursday. The bench posted the matter to January 7. Senior counsel Harish Salve is likely to appear on behalf of
the petitioner on that day.

Azharuddin filed the appeal against the judgment of the city civil court on August 27 dismissing his suit questioning the life ban imposed on him following charges of match-fixing.

In the appeal, the former skipper contended that the civil court had failed to appreciate that the entire episode was based on hearsay and that there was no full-fledged inquiry into the allegations before imposing the punishment on him. He also pointed out the Delhi High Court had permitted colleague cricket Ajay Jadeja to play domestic cricket and sought parity in treatment.
