West Indies made a formidable 336 for six on the first day of the second Test against Australia at the Adelaide Oval on Friday.

Dwayne Bravo scored a masterful 104, his third Test century and veteran Shivnarine Chanderpaul made a characteristic 62 to help the Caribbean cause.

The duo's 116-run partnership for the fourth wicket steadied the visitors' ship after the hosts had them on the rocks at 84 for three, and subsequently 119 for three – after Brendon Nash had retired hurt.

The Australian-born Nash, however, returned later in the day and remained unbeaten on 44, along with an aggressive-looking Darren Sammy (also 44 not out), their unbroken seventh wicket stand thus far yielding 63 runs.

Doug Bollinger and Shane Watson were the pick of the bowlers for the home team with identical figures of two for 42.

Bollinger, playing in only his second Test and first in almost a year, picked up the vitals wickets of West Indies captain Chris Gayle (26) and opener Adrian Barath (3), who made a century at Brisbane, in his first five overs.

Australia lead the series after their comprehensive win in the opening Test at the Gabba.
