Hosting Musharraf will be an honour: Jaitley

Onkar Singh in New Delhi | March 18, 2005 10:49 IST

Arun Jaitley, former minister of law and justice in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government and president of the Delhi and District Cricket Association, has said that it would be an honour to have Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf [Images] as the guest spectator in the pavillion during the one day cricket match between India and Pakistan to be played in Delhi on April 17.

Speaking to rediff.com in New Delhi Jaitley said that he and his team would be ready to receive the guest from the neighbouring state.

"It would indeed be a privilege to have President Pervez Musharraf as guest during the Delhi one day international match between India and Pakistan cricket teams," he said.

Asked about the status of the ground conditions and the pitch Jaitley said that they were almost ready.

"We have been working round the clock to ensure that the ground is ready for the match. I am happy to tell you that the outer ground is ready and so is the pitch. We are now awaiting final pitch inspection from pitch committee headed by Venkatsundaram and his colleagues. This inspection is likely to happen shortly," he said.

But Musharraf's decision to see the Delhi one dayer has warded off the threat of Delhi match being shifted to any other venue. Jaitley and his men have now exactly one month to put things back in order and wait for the VVIP visitor.

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh [Images] and other important political dignitaries are also expected to be on the venue on that day.

Meanwhile the Delhi police commission Dr K K Paul told rediff.com that he has no formal information about President Musharraf visiting Delhi for the match.

"Please ask the foreign ministry about it. We have no information about the impending presidential visit," Dr Paul said.
